Sydney, Thursday May 28, 2026 – The Digital Industry Group Inc. (DIGI) today welcomed the
Australian Government’s progress in building protections for Australians against scammers under the
Scams Prevention Framework (SPF).
On the release of the SPF draft industry codes, DIGI Managing Director Sunita Bose said:
“Professional scammers are relentless criminals who exploit every service across the economy to rob
Australians of their hard-earned savings.”
“The industry codes are the engine of the Scams Prevention Framework – they are what will drive the
uplifts in protection for Australians.
“These codes have the potential to make Australia a genuinely hostile environment for scammers, and
we look forward to working closely with the Government on finalisation and implementation.”
The Government’s position paper released today proposes a scheme for industry to automatically
reimburse scam victims for claims under $3000. On the proposed compensation and redress scheme,
Ms Bose said:
“DIGI’s relevant members are committed to working with the Government on an effective scams
redress scheme, but we have questions about the proposal released today.”
“An effective redress scheme requires proper investigation of claims, because an anti-scam system
that pays compensation automatically without scrutiny will be scammed itself. It could even make
Australia a more attractive target for scammers.”
“Automatic reimbursement could create unintended incentives for organised criminal networks to
further target Australians with scams, because it becomes a victimless crime. Because only certain
entities reimburse 100% of the loss, this encourages criminals to lure Australians to the unregulated
services without the law’s safeguards in place.”
DIGI will be making a submission on the draft codes and IDR consultation and looks forward to
continued collaboration with the Government, the Treasury and fellow regulated sectors.
